Marine Unit

The Town of Hamburg Police Marine Unit is responsible for marine law enforcement and boating accident investigation and management. The Marine Unit also has a Police Underwater Recovery Team. The Marine Unit is staffed by Police Officers who are certified Scuba Divers that have demonstrated the desire and proficiency to be effective in and on the water. Commanded by 2 Lieutenants the team has one 1 Detective and 6 Police Divers (one being a nurse and combat medic). Members of the unit are trained in Marine Law Enforcement, Underwater Death Investigation, Black Water Diving, Swift Water Rescue, Ice Rescue and Ice Diving. The Town of Hamburg has 10 miles of shoreline bordering Canadian waters. The unit utilizes a 21' Chris Craft Boat that was transferred from New York State Parks Police and refurbished. In May of 2007 the Town of Hamburg entered into an agreement with a local business and acquired 2 Yamaha Personal Watercraft at no cost to the Town. The unit is also a member of A.L.E.R.T. (Advanced Local Emergency Rescue Teams) and on call to respond to any waterborne emergency when requested by any of the several marine units in Western New York and Canada.

Our primary concern is the safety of the residents in and along the Town of Hamburg.
